GRA2201 - Assignment 2

For Assignment 2, the students of my Electronic Imaging course had to create an illustration made entirely of brushes, and ONLY brushes. Each student was randomly provided with a different theme for their illustration. They needed to use a minimum of 5 different brushes plus create their own custom brush. The custom brush needed to be created from a stock photo or illustration, but the other 5 brushes could either download them from the internet or custom created. It was important to use high resolution brushes (1300px or bigger). Assignment 2 focused on the following skills:
  • Creating and saving custom brushes
  • Utilizing online resources to download brushes
  • Working with and adjusting brush settings
  • Practice image composition
  • Working with and organizing layers
  • Using brush blending modes

GRA2201 - Assignment 1

This semester I've been given the opportunity to teach GRA2201 Electronic Imaging, aka the Photoshop class. This is an intermediate course where students of the Valencia Graphics Program get a chance to hone their Photoshop skills and learn some advanced techniques. Having taken the class myself as a student, I already had a general understanding of how the curriculum was structured, however I felt it necessary to make some changes and add in some additional assignments throughout the semester. So, in addition to the 4 major projects that the students will be working on this semester, they also have a series of 5, one-week long assignments that are designed to reinforce some of the skills and techniques learned in class.

A big part of learning Photoshop is through experimentation... trial and error... repetition, repetition, repetition. Though we give them step by step instructions on how to perform certain functions, it's important for the students to develop their own process and workflow and learn how to be problem solvers... hence the purpose of these assignments. Furthermore, these assignments are meant to coincide with the current project.

For Assignment 1, the students had to create a collage of images based on a day in their life. It could be just their average everyday, or a particularly memorable day in their life. This assignment was in some ways meant as a refresher of some of the basics learned in GRA1142 Design Essentials. Students had to use a minimum of 5 photos and one, scanned, hand-drawn element. They were given specific file dimensions, color modes, and file formats to turn in, but otherwise had complete creative freedom to design as they wish. Assignment 1 focused on the following skills:
  • Organizing and managing images
  • Scanning images
  • Practice image composition
  • Working with layers
  • Working w/ file formats, resolution, and color modes
  • Using selection tools
  • Using blending modes
  • Using adjustment layers
  • Working with layer masks and selections
So, without further adieu, here are the results!

Illustration Friday - Chicken

I'm going to make an attempt to do Illustration Friday. Not making any promises.

This weeks' theme was "Chicken". Saw a picture of a chicken with Chrono-esque hair... couldn't resist.

Delicious, decadent gift wrap

Every year I plan out my gift wrapping way in advance. I gotta have a theme. Sometimes I go a little overboard, like this year for example, but hey, who cares - I have fun and I get to be creative. This year I wanted to create packaging that was decadent, rich, and delicious... so I went for a chocolate, gold, and ivory color scheme. I even coordinated my Christmas tree to match (in past years my tree has been red and silver... just got a little tired of it). This year supplies included:

-Gift wrap & bags from Paper Source, Kate's Paperie, and Target
-LOTS of ribbon & embellishments from Michael's
-Candyscript typeface from Veer
-A glue gun, double sided tape, and a circle cutter

After much work, glue burns, and a table full of glitter, I proudly present to you the results of my endeavors. Happy Holidays everyone!

Sunken Gardens 2010

Back in June we took a family vacation to Treasure Island, FL. While we were there, we decided to check out the Sunken Gardens in St. Pete. Being an opportunistic photographer, I jumped at the chance to torture use my brother, Marc, and his new girlfriend, Emily, as models. It turned into a cute, little love session. The full set can be seen here.
